No Kidding!

Smiling GoatDid ya hear about the Google goats?  Google has fields at their Mountain View headquarters that need to be cleared of brush about once a year.  Usually they do it the old-fashioned way with a crew of people on large noisy lawn mowers.  This year, as part of their green efforts, Google decided to do it the old old-fashioned way and use goats.

They hired a herder from California Grazing to bring in 200 goats for about a week.  The goats managed to “mow” the four-foot tall brush in just a few days.  They were kept in line by their middle management supervisor, Jen, the border collie.

This green approach saves the gas used to run the mowers, although we can’t discount the gas used hauling the goats back and forth.  Using goats also reduces noise and air pollution.  In addition, as the goats eat their paychecks, they also expend fertilizer at the same time.  The best part of this for Google (besides a clearer conscience), is that it costs about the same as the traditional mowing.  Going green without losing green is always a bonus!

This southern belle thinks the goats are super cute.  If you want to watch goats perform their jobs better than some of your co-workers, you can find some cool footage below.  Go, Google goats, go!
