Apple gets greener, and I don't mean Granny Smith

Green AppleHey y’all!  Did you know an apple a day keeps the doctor away?  Well now Apple Inc. is trying to keep the pollution monster away too.  The rumor is that Apple has teamed up with LG to make their 15-inch MacBooks with super thin OLED displays.  According to an insider, these displays should show up in a few months.

These rumors come from a deal that was made between LG and Apple last year.  LG signed a $500m deal with Apple to supply them with certain types of displays through 2013.  Why are these displays so special you might ask? These new displays will be made with an OLED (organic light emitting diode) screen.

Want to know what an OLED is (I did)?  What better place to find the answer than Wikipedia! So here is what is says:

An organic light emitting diode (OLED) is any light emitting diode (LED) whose emissive electroluminescent layer is composed of a film of organic compounds. The layer usually contains a polymer substance that allows suitable organic compounds to be deposited. They are deposited in rows and columns onto a flat carrier by a simple "printing" process. The resulting matrix of pixels can emit light of different colors.

Such systems can be used in television screens, computer displays, small, portable system screens such as cell phones and PDAs, advertising, information and indication. OLEDs typically emit less light per area than inorganic solid-state based LEDs which are usually designed for use as point-light sources.

A significant benefit of OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Thus they draw far less power and, when powered from a battery, can operate longer on the same charge. Because there is no need for a backlight, an OLED display can be much thinner than an LCD panel.

Are you a more visual person?  Me too.  Here is a video about OLEDs:

In other words, these displays will be earth friendly y’all… and super cool too.  Just one more reason why Apple rocks!

Apple is the best! I think it's funny that the "crazy green people" used to be so upset with them, and now they are probably one of the greenest computer makers out there. I'd never buy anything else. Can't wait until Apple makes a tablet. Maybe that's what they are getting this new screen technology stuff for.
