Giant Cabbage Inspires Girl
If you are like me, it is painful to watch the news these days. There is hardly any good news, just stories of killings, fires, and hard times. So it is refreshing to catch the end of NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams. The “Making a Difference” segment recognizes people who are trying to help people who have been hurt in this struggling economy. Recently, my big sis sent an email with a link to a story about Summerville, SC featured on The Nightly News. Since I grew up in Summerville, this story is extra special to my southern heart y’all.
The best part of this story is that Katie Stagliano, a 10-year old student at Pinewood Preparatory School, is the one “Making a Difference.” It started with a simple dream, no hungry children. As Brian Williams put it, “She had a good idea that has grown into a whole lot more.” Katie’s idea came from a small cabbage seed that was planted in her backyard. Amazingly the seed grew into a 40-pound cabbage! She and her family took it to a local soup kitchen where it fed nearly 300 people.
This sparked the idea for Katie to take it one step farther. With some help from her 4th grade class, several volunteers, some land donated by her school, and a generous donation of plants from Bonnie Plants, Katie started growing a garden at her school to help provide food to local soup kitchens.
“If a ten year old like me can think of this, imagine what other people much older than me can think of.” Well put Katie!! I like the way you think.
So go out and plant a seed y’all. Even a caveman can do it.

I love it when young people "get it." It goes to show how important it is to listen to kids when they have an idea. Kudos to her parents for supporting her. I hope they continue to encourage her to do great things.
It is great to see such big ideas come from the younger population!
