Here comes the sun… chips
SunChips are really stepping up when it comes to going green. First there was the solar powered plant in Modesto, CA, then their sponsorship of the rebuilding of Greenburg, KS (a town destroyed by a tornado and rebuilt to be the first “green” town), and now they are planning to make their bags 100% compostable come 2010. And this is all on top of having some mighty fine tasting chips!
Currently every 10.5oz SunChip bag is made from 33% renewable, plant based materials, but the really exciting part happens in 2010 when they plan to introduce the first fully compostable bag of its kind (what do you bet they debut the bag on Earth Day!).
The bag (created in partnership with NatureWorks, LLC) will use the plant based plastic known as Ingeo. This is the world’s first and only plastic made from 100% annually renewable resource. The current source is corn. These bags are designed to fully decompose in about 14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost pile.
As SunChips puts it “You eat the chips. The earth eats the bag. And we all live in a cleaner world.”
Way to go SunChips! I think I’ll go replenish my ever present supply of your delicious chips today.
